This lesson requires the children to put photographs in order of the instructions, and then write the instruction that they think goes with the picture together as a class. The children make the box based on the pictures and then write their own instructions based on what they have made. As a plenary, the class can textmark the features from an example given.

This powerpoint guides children through writing their own instructions. First, there is a list of features, then the class use these features to text mark the example (How to make a paper plate mask). Children are then given a few minutes to make their own Olympic torches before they write instructions for them. The lesson concludes with text-marking an example.

I used this lesson for a Year 3 class on non-chronological report writing. The children used subheadings for their paragraphs on contrasting weather environments and what would be appropriate to wear in each. This lesson worked really well because they did not need to do any further research before writing, which meant that we could focus on the features of a non-chronological report.

This resource was used with my Year 2 class for them to describe the effects of their own magical medicine. I've included a loose plan so that the worksheets make more sense. The worksheet has been differentiated three ways.

This is the classic storytelling game of fill-in-the-blanks, fold it down and pass it on. I have included some instructions in case it is unfamiliar to you. I think it would be most appropriate for Y1-4, but my Year 4s found it hilarious.

This Powerpoint guides children through writing a discussion text. The children will be given opportunity to discuss the 'for's and 'against's school and home-school before writing a discussion text on the subject. The planning contains objectives from the 2014 Year 4 English Curriculum.

This resource helps children to understand how the author uses actions to describe how a character is feeling. Using four short quotes from Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach, children can draw a face depicting the feeling in the box and then think about how the character might move if they feel this way.

This lesson requires the pupils to fill in an application form to become a Tudor Monarch. The planning and task-setting powerpoint are included, and give examples of interests and skills of the monarchs, as well as a few instruments and sports of the time. I taught this lesson to a mixed 3/4 class during History, but after they had already looked at persuasive writing. This isn't essential, but there are a list of logical connectives for the more able children to use.

A very detailed planning frame for a discussion text on zoos. I used this to discuss ideas as a whole class and then gave to my lower ability children to help them choose sentences for their final piece. I used this for a Y4 class but I think it could be used for older children also. Differentiated plan for the lesson also included with objectives from the Year 4 English curriculum 2014.

This worksheet is for the children to create a piece of persuasive writing to adopt an animal. Our topic was related to lions and so the children were encouraged to choose a wild cat after looking at a few animal adoption charity pages. However, any animal could be chosen.
The planning is included but the powerpoint gives an example of an animal adoption charity page and explains the worksheet.

This is a newspaper writing frame that could be used for any topic but I used it for our work on The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe, hence the heading Narnian News. There is space for the child's name, the date and a picture, along with the columns for the children to write their news into.

Planning for 10 lessons, I allow for at least 3 weeks to get through it. This resource includes the planning, the Powerpoint (also as PDF) and the templates for character and scene description, newspaper report and their own basic plan for their story. Other ideas include a book cover design and event poster.
